TBH I would love to have an interface to a SMART-capable boot device directly on my raspis, usually a SATA plug would do (have done...) the trick. Powering is another question, I know. That's why a small non-ARM board is now often the hardware of choice for e.g. NAS applications.
SD-cards for the boot device works fine here for 95% of the use cases, but SATA would be a nice option. Together with an enclosure with 5/12V power supply. But the times for such an idea would have been some 10 years ago...![Wink ;-)]()
