General discussion • 'apt update' kernel bump query

Ran a 'sudo apt update' and 'sudo apt full-upgrade' and it appears there has been a bump to the kernel version -

Code:

The following NEW packages will be installed:  linux-headers-6.12.20+rpt-common-rpi linux-headers-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v6  linux-headers-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v7 linux-headers-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v7l  linux-image-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v6 linux-image-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v7  linux-image-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v7l linux-image-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v8:arm64  linux-kbuild-6.12.20+rpt
I allowed that to proceed and all seems to be correct -

Code:

Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.142+rpt3+deb12u1) ...update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v8'/boot/initrd.img-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v8' -> '/boot/firmware/initramfs8'update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v7l'/boot/initrd.img-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v7l' -> '/boot/firmware/initramfs7l'update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v7'/boot/initrd.img-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v7' -> '/boot/firmware/initramfs7'update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v6'/boot/initrd.img-6.12.20+rpt-rpi-v6' -> '/boot/firmware/initramfs'

Code:

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.6.74+rpt-rpi-v8update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.6.74+rpt-rpi-v7lupdate-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.6.74+rpt-rpi-v7update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.6.74+rpt-rpi-v6
But it's not clear to me why it went on to generate these -

Code:

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v8update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v7lupdate-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v7update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v6
Especially as it seems 6.6.62 is no longer required ... ?

Code:

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: linux-headers-6.6.62+rpt-common-rpi linux-headers-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v6 linux-headers-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v7 linux-headers-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v7l linux-image-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v6 linux-image-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v7 linux-image-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v7l linux-image-6.6.62+rpt-rpi-v8:arm64 linux-kbuild-6.6.62+rptUse 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
I had noticed this on previous kernel bumps and was wondering what the explanation is for doing things which, to me, don't seem to be needed ?
