Hi all,
First off, I need to say I’m not a technical person – but I am logical. So please go easy on the acronyms and jargon if you reply, as I might not know what they mean. I’m learning as I go, and I really appreciate any help you can offer.
Here’s the situation:
I had a vision for a project using a Raspberry Pi 5, housed in a SunFounder Pironman 5 case, with the Raspberry Pi AI Kit (Hailo-8L module). I’ve got a 1TB external SSD, and I boot from a 256GB Kingston USB3 thumb drive. My plan was to run:
•Raspberry Pi OS with a desktop GUI (so I can use VNC to access it)
•Home Assistant with Supervisor (so I can use add-ons easily)
•AI software for security cameras and object detection via the Hailo module
I thought it would all be relatively straightforward, but I’ve hit problem after problem.
I’ve been using AI tools (like ChatGPT) to help me get this working, but either I’m not explaining things right, or the AI is misinterpreting what I need. I’ve ended up running commands I didn’t fully understand, and last night it all came to a head – my setup is now basically unusable. The Pironman case is built and beautiful, but the system doesn’t boot properly anymore.
So now I’m starting over.
Here’s my main question:
Is it actually possible to run Raspberry Pi OS (with desktop), Home Assistant with Supervisor, AI software (like YOLO/OpenCV with the Hailo accelerator), and camera tools – all on the same Raspberry Pi 5 at once?
I’d like to use VNC to access the Pi graphically, have Home Assistant running (with Supervisor so I can use add-ons), and also be able to run my AI tools for camera recognition – all without having to boot from multiple drives or swap things around.
If someone out there can help me understand how this should be set up (and what’s actually feasible), I’d really appreciate it. I’m willing to start from scratch – I just need a clear plan and some guidance in plain English.
Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply.
